Yesterday I posted that I was helping my Dad look for a car for my little sister.

Has anyone on here had this era of RAV4? Anything I should look out for if we go to check it out? It looks like it has been well maintained. The fact that its a Minnesota car with very little rust is kind of a miracle. It looks very promising.

It’s a lifted 4wd Camry...that should about tell you everything you need to know.

(I haven’t owned one but anybody I know who has, had them forever and never seemed to have any issues)

I know a thing or two about them. They are slow and don’t get good mileage but they are great fun in a pure sort of way. The 5 speeds had an issue with 5th going out, but the 4 speed is pretty stout. The 3f-fe engine is also likewise stout but use synthetic or the valve guides can go out.

It’s a tall Corolla Wagon with AWD. It’s good. They are surprisingly fun as well.

I had a 96 as my first car. To this day my dad says its the most reliable car he’s ever owned. We had it for 14 years and 130k miles and the only thing it needed in that time was a new catalytic converter and a wheel bearing. That is with my 16-20 year old self beating on it and my 16-18 year old brother thrashing it for another two years.

Gas mileage was bad, off roading was not terrible considering it was just so light it would hop over anything. Could get it going sideways pretty easily in a gravel parking lot. The seats fold into a bed configuration, and there is a ton of storage in the back. The tailgate was a little bulky and awkward, but other than that its pretty well designed.

3s-fe. The F is a straight six. Besides, it means you can swap in a 3S-GTE from an MR2 turbo. Maybe not the most *practical* advice, but...

When I’m ready to retire my van or the car I will start searching for a Turbo van again. Until then, I’m happy with what I have unless I find a screaming deal on one.
